Moments before Ramadan – Some tips for managers and administrators in an organization with Arab employees:

🌈 Ramadan is observed only by Muslims. Not everyone fasts. Just like in other religions, not everyone observes all the commandments and not everyone fasts. Don't assume beforehand.

🌈 How to greet? You definitely want to say "Happy holiday" to Muslim employees on the first day of Ramadan, but be aware that it is not customary to say "Happy holiday" because it is not a holiday. It is recommended to say "Ramadan Kareem", which means generous Ramadan.

🌈 Hours: Fasting begins in the early morning and continues until evening. This means that starting from the afternoon, there is a chance that Muslim employees may already be hungry and tired. It is preferable to avoid interviews or important meetings during these hours (none of us is happy to do an interview or participate in an important meeting when we are tired and hungry).

🌈 Mornings: It's possible that employees wake up very early in the morning to eat. I recommend being flexible with work hours. To prevent frustration – from the fasting employees, managers, and other employees – it's advisable to talk to the fasting employees before Ramadan and clarify exactly what they need. What will allow them to work effectively during this period and formulate agreed-upon rules.

🌈 Company events: If you're planning company events and you have Muslim employees, it may be better to postpone it to a more convenient date for everyone. If you still have an event during this period, it's recommended to consult with the employees themselves about the hours. An interesting idea could be to have an Iftar meal – an evening meal at the end of the fast – together. It's definitely acceptable to have this meal even outside of a family setting.

🌈 Eating in shared areas: Is it "allowed" to eat next to fasting employees? Will it harm them if refreshments are available during meetings? Some may be less bothered by it, while others may find it more disturbing. The most important thing is not to make assumptions. If you don't mind eating next to someone on Yom Kippur, it doesn't say anything about the sensitivity of the issue during Ramadan. Talk to your Muslim employees and understand the situation before making decisions.

🌈 In general – This is our time to show Muslim employees that we hear and see them. Talk to them, ask questions, show interest, and be willing to meet their needs.
